چکیده

To the Editor: Bassett et al. (June 5 issue)1 describe a case of a child who was poisoned by e-cigarette refill liquid. In California, we have also seen a dramatic increase in telephone calls to poison control centers because of exposures to nicotine solution; there were 35 total cases of exposure in the period from 2010 through 20122 and 105 cases in 2013 alone. In 2013, exposure to nicotine refill solution was involved in 18% of all cases. Reported exposure to this solution in 10 children resulted in hospital evaluation in 7 and mild nicotine poisoning in 3. Children were not the only victims; 4 adults mistakenly instilled nicotine refill solution into their eyes instead of eyedrops, resulting in considerable but transient irritation in each case. In addition, systemic symptoms of nicotine poisoning developed in 3 adults after they spilled nicotine refill solution on their skin. There is currently no federal legislation with respect to labeling or packaging of nicotine refill solution. Given the high toxicity of nicotine and the widespread availability of nicotine refill solution, perhaps these products should fall under the umbrella of the Poison Prevention Packaging Act and thus be sold in child-resistant packaging. Transplantation of selected or transgenic blood stem cells – a future treatment for HIV/AIDS?

Interaction with the chemokine receptor, CCR5, is a necessary precondition for maintaining HIV-1 infection. Individuals with the CCR5-delta32 deletion who lack this receptor are highly resistant to infection by the most common forms of HIV-1. We recently reported on the successful transplantation in an HIV-1-positive patient of allogeneic stem cells homozygous for the CCR5-delta32 allele, which...

Long-term control of HIV by CCR5 Delta32/Delta32 stem-cell transplantation.

Infection with the human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) requires the presence of a CD4 receptor and a chemokine receptor, principally chemokine receptor 5 (CCR5). Homozygosity for a 32-bp deletion in the CCR5 allele provides resistance against HIV-1 acquisition. We transplanted stem cells from a donor who was homozygous for CCR5 delta32 in a patient with acute myeloid leukemia and HIV-1 ...

Coregulation of HIV-1 dependency factors in individuals heterozygous to the CCR5-delta32 deletion

BACKGROUND CCR5-delta32 heterozygous individuals are susceptible to HIV-1. However, it is not clear if there is a relevant protective effect against transmission and a beneficial effect in terms of HIV progression which cannot be attributed to CCR5 surface density alone. Therefore we investigated HIV-1 dependency factors (HDF) which might be differently regulated in CCR5 wild type (WT) and CCR5...

CCR5 Levels and Expression Pattern Correlate with Infectability by Macrophage-tropic HIV-1, In Vitro

Chemokine receptors serve as coreceptors for HIV entry into CD4+ cells. Their expression is thought to determine the tropism of viral strains for different cell types, and also to influence susceptibility to infection and rates of disease progression. Of the chemokine receptors, CCR5 is the most important for viral transmission, since CCR5 is the principal receptor for primary, macrophage-tropi...

The evolutionary history of the CCR5-Delta32 HIV-resistance mutation.

The CCR5 chemokine receptor is exploited by HIV-1 to gain entry into CD4+ T cells. A deletion mutation (Delta32) confers resistance against HIV by obliterating the expression of the receptor on the cell surface. Intriguingly, this allele is young in evolutionary time, yet it has reached relatively high frequencies in Europe. These properties indicate that the mutation has been under intense pos...

The Impact of CCR5 Polymorphism on the Clinical Outcome of Allogeneic Stem Cell Transplantation

The natural function of the C-C chemokine receptor type 5 (CCR5) is poorly understood. However, polymorphisms of this gene have been described to influence the outcome of allogeneic organ and stem cell transplantation. Most intensively studied is a 32 base pair deletion in the CCR5 gene (CCR5-delta32) located on chromosome 3 which leads to a non-functional protein. It is supposed that this dele...
